What is it?

If unwanted hair on the full arms decides what you wear or how comfortable you feel, laser hair removal offers a lasting alternative to shaving, waxing, tweezing and hair-removal creams. Over a course of sessions, hair grows back finer and sparser, leaving your skin smoother for longer.

Your clinician assesses your skin tone and hair at your consultation and plans your treatment around them.

What does it treat?

  • Unwanted hair on the full arms
  • Ingrown hairs and irritation from shaving or waxing
  • Shadowing left by regular shaving

How does it work?

Hair contains a pigment called melanin. The laser light is absorbed by this pigment and turned into heat, which reaches the hair follicle and damages its ability to grow new hair. A cooling system protects your skin and keeps you comfortable.

Hair grows in cycles, and a follicle responds only while it is in its active growth phase. Not every hair is in that phase at the same time, which is why treatment is repeated over several sessions.

What happens during treatment?

  1. Your clinician examines the area and confirms the right settings for your skin and hair.
  2. The area is cleansed, and protective eyewear is put on.
  3. Your clinician moves the laser hand piece across the area, with cooling to keep you comfortable.
  4. Soothing care is applied, and you can continue your day.

Downtime and recovery

There is no downtime. The area may look red or slightly swollen around the follicles for a few hours, and a cold compress helps. Your skin is more sensitive to the sun for a while after each session.

How many sessions?

A course of sessions is needed. How many you need and the time between them depend on the body area, how thick and dense your hair is, hormones and age, and your clinician agrees the plan with you.

Once your course is complete, an occasional top-up session can deal with any regrowth caused by hormonal changes.

Aftercare

  • Avoid intense exercise, sport and perfume on the area for two days.
  • Avoid very hot showers and baths for a couple of days, and saunas, hot tubs and chlorinated pools for three days.
  • Keep the area out of the sun for at least a week, and use a gentle, unscented sunscreen when you cannot avoid it.
  • Do not pluck, wax or use hair-removal creams between sessions. Shaving is fine.
  • Use a cold compress if you notice redness or swelling.

Who is it suitable for?

Laser hair removal works on hair that has pigment, so very fair, grey or red hair may respond less well. Your skin tone, hair colour, hormonal factors and any medication you take affect suitability and results, and are assessed at your consultation.

Combination treatments

If you are prone to ingrown hairs or darkening in the area, laser hair removal can be paired with a programme to manage ingrown hairs and pigmentation.

Results timeline

Hair looks thinner and sparser within about three weeks of each session, and growth reduces further with every treatment.

Laser hair removal gives a permanent reduction in hair, not a guarantee that every hair is gone. Most treated follicles stop producing hair, but a few may still grow fine, light hairs.

Frequently asked questions

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people find it comfortable. The feeling is often compared to a rubber band snapping lightly against the skin, and the cooling system helps. No anaesthetic is needed.

How should I prepare?

For four weeks before treatment, do not pluck, wax, tweeze or use hair-removal creams, so each follicle still has a hair for the laser to find. Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan before and during your course, because tanned skin absorbs more of the light.

What should I do on the day?

Shave the area on the day or the evening before, leaving the hair no longer than about 2 mm. Come with clean skin, without lotion, deodorant or perfume on the area.

How long does a session take?

It depends on the size of the area. Small areas take a few minutes, and most sessions take less than an hour.

Can I have laser hair removal on darker skin?

Your clinician assesses your skin tone and hair at your consultation and chooses settings to suit them. They will tell you honestly if the treatment is not right for you.

Will I need top-up sessions?

Possibly. Hormonal changes and natural regrowth can bring back a small amount of hair over time, which an occasional top-up session can reduce.
