90 minutes

What is it?

Deep tissue massage uses slow strokes and firm, sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is designed for chronic tension, knots and stiffness rather than pure relaxation, and is popular with people who exercise, work at a desk or carry tension in their back, neck and shoulders.

Your session lasts 90 minutes.

What does it treat?

  • Chronic muscle tension and knots
  • Stiff neck, shoulders and lower back
  • Muscle tightness from exercise
  • Tension from posture or desk work

How does it work?

Your therapist works slowly, with firm pressure from the hands, forearms and elbows, along and across the muscle fibres. This helps release tight bands of muscle and restore easier movement. The pressure is strong but should never be painful, so tell your therapist if you want it lighter.

What happens during treatment?

  1. You complete a short health questionnaire, and your therapist asks about any tension, injuries or pressure you prefer.
  2. You undress to your level of comfort and lie on the treatment bed, covered with towels so only the area being worked on is uncovered.
  3. Your therapist warms the muscles first, then works deeply on the areas of tension you discussed.
  4. You rest for a moment afterwards and are offered water before you leave.

Downtime and recovery

There is no downtime. Some muscle soreness for a day or two is normal, similar to how you might feel after exercise.

How many sessions?

A single session can be booked whenever you need it. For ongoing tension, regular sessions every few weeks help keep it from building up again, and your therapist can suggest a rhythm that suits you.

Aftercare

  • Drink water and take things easy for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid a heavy meal, alcohol or strenuous exercise straight afterwards.
  • Leave the oil on your skin for a few hours if you can, then shower as normal.

Who is it suitable for?

Tell us before your session if you are pregnant, have a medical condition such as high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes or a blood-clotting disorder, or have a recent injury, surgery, fever, infection or skin condition. Massage is not advised while you are unwell, and some conditions need your doctor's approval first. Deep pressure is not suitable if you bruise easily, take blood-thinning medication or have osteoporosis, unless your doctor agrees.

Combination treatments

Can be alternated with a Swedish massage, depending on how your muscles feel.
